It has been a long time coming, but the official trailer of the House of the Dragon season two is finally upon us.
The previous trailers we saw were the dueling ones, marking the very clear lines between the warring Targaryens: Team Black vs Team Green.
In the recently released trailer, we immediately see Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) at the Red Keep, right in front of the Iron Throne. So many questions… when is this? What is he doing there?
Obviously, we don't have the answers to those yet. However, he does tell Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) later in the video that he has plans to go King's Landing.
The trailer also shows us Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) mulling over her decision to go to war against her kinsmen and whether she still had the support of the people around her. However, this is also the first time we see her with a weapon: a sword. She picks it up from the table, and I'm hoping she gets to wield it this season — maybe even on dragonback.
Speaking of dragons, the trailer has Rhaenyra's Syrax, Aegon's (Tom Glynn-Carney) Sunfire, Daemon's Caraxes, Baela's (Bethany Antonia) Moondancer, Rhaneys' Meleys and Aemond's (Ewan Mitchell) Vhagar.
Caraxes lands on a stone structure in the middle of a rainstorm, very cinematic. At the end of the first season, Daemon had suggested they take Harrenhal in the Riverlands. Maybe this is when he makes his move.
His daughter, Princess Baela, takes to the sky with her dragon as well. It looks like she's in pursuit of Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) in the middle of battle.
The two queens, Rhaenys and Meleys, make an appearance as well. Aemond and the ancient Vhagar also fly.
The North remembers
Then we get to one of the most highly anticipated moments in this upcoming season: the audience's first look at the Stark ancestor, Cregan (Tom Taylor). In a blink-and-you-miss-it instant, we see Prince Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett) and the current Lord of Winterfell together. They may end up traveling even farther up north and into Wall territory.
Article Continues BelowThen we get to arguably the most epic battle in the Dance of Dragons in the Battle at Rook's Rest, House Staunton's seat. This was fought in the crownlands. If you've read the books, you know how it ends, no sense in my spoiling it for you. However, safe to say this is a battle fought both in the air with dragons and on land with armies. Casualties abound and several significant character deaths and injuries happen.
In the trailer, we also see what seems to be riots in King's Landing. Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Helaena (Phia Saban) appear to be caught in the middle of a mob. Even more questions: what are they doing there? What happened to cause senior members of the Seven Kingdoms' royal family to be out in the open? Again, no answers just yet.
Blood and Cheese are here… but where are the others?
But let's get to something else. This season also introduces the very interesting characters of Blood and Cheese. Before we catch a glimpse of them in the trailer, Daemon's erstwhile spymaster Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) says there is “more than one way to fight a war.” It's after she says that, that we literally shady figures skulking about in the tunnels. To add to the already sinister atmosphere, we can also see gold coins change hands.
If we went by the book, this is most likely the start of one of Fire and Blood's darkest storyline: Team Black's quest for vengeance for the death of Prince Lucerys (Elliot Grihault). It's brutal. And the repercussions of their actions reverberate throughout the kingdom and the entire Targaryen bloodline.
We have many questions. And to get the answers, we'll have to wait another month. Aside from Blood and Cheese and Lord Cregan Stark, we haven't seen any of the new characters yet.
House of the Dragon season two premieres June 16 on HBO | Max.
