He is greeted by Botan (Kotone Furukawa), a spirit world guide who tells him that his selfless act caught the attention of the underworld. There is no place reserved for him in heaven or hell yet.

Koenma (Keita Machida), son of the Underworld ruler, has him go through a number of tests. He passes the tests with help from his friends, Keiko Yukimura and Kazuma Kuwabara (Shuheu Uesugi). When Yusuke is resurrected, he is appointed “Underworld Detective” and tasked with investigating cases which involve demons and apparitions in the human world.
