The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been dropping hints about the Young Avengers for a while now. Earlier, The Marvels movie practically confirmed it without explicitly stating it. It's like when Nick Fury was recruiting for the Avengers initiative. So, with The Marvels released, the question arises: What's Nick Fury's role in the future of the MCU?

Nick Fury's recent MCU projects

Following his own show in Secret Invasion, which didn't receive universal acclaim, it focuses on SHIELD's remnants, Skrulls, and Fury's past. This means his character might still have more in store. In The Marvels, Fury collaborates with SWORD agent Monica Rambeau (Photon). And discovers a strange anomaly disrupting space and time.

As Rambeau becomes linked with Carol Danvers and the emerging superhero Ms. Marvel, Fury, their closest ally, dives into unraveling the mystery and battling the villain Dar-Benn.

So far, there has been no buzz on whether Fury's future in the MCU will start from here. Or from the Secret Invasion.

But when asked before his Disney series and MCU film, Samuel L. Jackson expressed to Empire Magazine his reluctance to bid farewell to Nick Fury. He loves the character's depth and the expanding possibilities within the MCU.

“I love playing him, and I love the fact that they’re opening him up to all these other possibilities and this whole life that he has,” said Jackson.

Even after the release of the Secret Invasion series on Disney Plus, Jackson hopes to continue his involvement. “So hopefully, I’m not done, and in this new phase of the MCU, I’ll still be floating in and out of there somehow, some way.”

Nick Fury's future in MCU

While it's uncertain if there will be another Captain Marvel 3 with Nick Fury, there's a chance he'll feature in future Avengers films.

With new unexpected shows to come from Disney+, a spiritual sequel to the Agents of SHIELD show, somewhat removed from the MCU, could see Fury leading a new group of agents. Plus, a possible interplanetary mission for SABER too. Regardless, these are mere speculations from fans.

Based on comics, though, another Nick Fury solo show or a SABER series on Disney+ might just clear up some things too. At the moment, it seems the MCU is focusing on the multiverse saga and other young characters to replace the original Avengers. Hopefully, it will soon be certain that both the character and the SHIELD will make a return to the MCU at some point.
