The Star Wars universe is so vast and filled with wonderful characters, but it's important to remember that despite the fact that the Force and lightsabers are not the only important parts of the universe — there are some really cool non-Jedi, too. On May the Fourth Be With You Day, we're going to rank the 10 best non-Jedi characters.
The 10 best non-Jedi characters, ranked
10. Rex
To be fair, I only remember Rex from The Clone Wars series and the feature-length film. Rebels just missed me, but Rex was always a highlight in The Clone Wars. He also has the coolest armor in any Star Wars project.
9. Chewbacca
I've never been obsessed with Chewbacca, but the one thing that bumps him up on this list is that he's the ultimate wingman and friend. I'd want nothing more than a friend like Chewbacca by my side. His blaster is also so cool — I remember collecting the toy versions as a kid with the Revenge of the Sith action figures.
8. The Ewoks
Perhaps terrifying if you really think about their actions, the Ewoks are too cute to ignore. Although, I remember playing the terrifying “Ewok Hunt” game mode on Battlefront — something a bit scarier than you'd expect for a Star Wars game. But for as much as I love the cuddly creatures, the Ewok Adventures movies were always a wild miss for me (and frankly, I didn't understand what the purpose of them was given I watched them as a kid after the prequels happened and long before the sequel trilogy was even public knowledge).
7. General Grievous
I'm not sure if this counts, but it's my list and I'm throwing General Grievous on this list. While the live-action fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi was sick, the one that comes to mind is his fight in the 2003 Clone Wars animated series. I will stand by the fact that I think a feature film that leans into horror with him would be amazing. Plus, doesn't he have a castle? What a setting that'd be.
6. General Hux
Okay, this is being said somewhat facetiously, but the delivery of the “I'm the spy” line in Rise of Skywalker has never failed to make me laugh upon thinking about it. Give Domhnall Gleeson credit for going with whatever twist and turn each sequel film gave him — the inconsistencies with his character are hilarious — especially when Rian Johnson made him do that ridiculous Marvel-like back-and-forth with Oscar Isaac at the beginning of The Last Jedi.
5. Finn
Article Continues BelowPoor Finn — he went from being a potential Jedi in The Force Awakens to being friend-zoned by Rey (this was something I made sure to not mention when I interviewed John Boyega). He was an interesting case because even if he wasn't going to become a Jedi, you could've given him more than going on that casino side quest in The Last Jedi and then doing whatever he did in Rise of Skywalker. Hopefully, the rumors of Boyega returning to Star Wars are true because we need #JusticeforFinn.
4. Din Djarin (The Mandalorian)
While I still haven't caught up with Season 3 of The Mandalorian — Disney hardly marketed it, to be fair — the titular character is the closest thing Star Wars has come to a Clint Eastwood-Man with No Name cowboy character. Despite a hard exterior, his soft side comes out whenever Grogu is around, and that's just the type of wholesome stuff Star Wars needs. Pedro Pascal (and his body double) are also great and really make the performance unique.
3. Boba Fett
As a kid, I just loved the green on Boba Fett's armor. While I couldn't be bothered with The Book of Boba Fett (mostly out of fear of ruining his aura), it was cool to see a fan theory that has been around since Return of the Jedi actually validated. Okay, maybe Boba was the first Man with No Name-like character that Star Wars had seen, but he wasn't the central part of a project as The Mandalorian is (the series is named after him, after all). That said, his introduction was executed perfectly.
2. Lando Calrissian
Similarly to the next entry on this list, Lando Calrissian is a great character who was made iconic thanks to a great performance from Billy Dee Williams. Seeing him reappear in The Rise of Skywalker was a highlight and even Donald Glover did a great job channeling his inner Billy Dee in Solo. It's entirely possible that Lando is the most charismatic member of the galaxy far, far away.
1. Han Solo
No one beats Han Solo. Thanks to Harrison Ford's iconic portrayal of the character, Han Solo is one of the best characters in the Star Wars universe — bar none. And to be completely transparent, I enjoyed Alden Ehrenreich's portrayal — especially given the size of the shoes he was supposed to fill. He had the right cadence and swagger that it worked for me.
