The first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi has ended and with it comes a lot of surprises for Star Wars fans. While the overall story isn't the home run everyone is expecting it to be, one can't deny that it has captured that spark between the titular character and his former apprentice, Darth Vader. But apart from the great element of the show is a massive cameo at the end that has generated a lot of buzz online. We take a deep dive into and learn why Qui-Gon Jinn's return at the end of episode 6 is such a big deal.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi ending cameo explained
The first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+ ended with the former Jedi master exorcising his demons by defeating Darth Vader in combat. Although he didn't finish him off, Kenobi has somehow come to terms with what happened in Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith.
Right after that battle, Obi-Wan raced back to Tatooine after sensing a young Luke Skywalker was in trouble. After seeing Owen and Beru Lars search for the boy, he sees a regretful Reva come back with him. At this point, the former Third Sister comes back from the Dark Side after choosing not to end Luke's life.
After Obi-Wan has successfully rescued a young Princess Leia Organa, helped Reva redeem herself, and defeat Vader, he finally obtained Owen's blessing to meet Luke for the first time. Once that's done, he packs his things up and moves to another part of the desert. This is where Kenobi encounters the Force ghost of Qui-Gon Jinn, his former master.
Jinn, played by Liam Neeson, tells Kenobi that they've got ways to go. This exchange implies that he will teach his former apprentice how to return to the living after dying and being one with the Force.
Who is Qui-Gon Jinn?
Qui-Gon Jinn first appeared in Episode 1 as Obi-Wan's master and was tasked to settle a dispute between Naboo and the Trade Federation. During the course of that film, the venerated Jedi master would encounter a young Anakin Skywalker, a child who he believes is the Chosen One and the person who will bring balance to the Force.
As Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan take the young Skywalker along their mission to free Naboo from the clutches of the Trade Federation, they finally meet Darth Maul and the pair engage him in a lightsaber duel. It was at this point that the Jedi Master met his end, as he ended up facing the Sith Lord alone while Kenobi was trapped behind a laser barrier. But before he breathed his last, Qui-Gon made his apprentice promise to train Anakin in the ways of the Force as a Jedi.
Right before his death, Qui-Gon Jinn was viewed as a maverick among the Jedi order. Being Count Dooku's former apprentice, he continually questioned the Jedi Council's decisions and wanted the Order to be more proactive in its dealings with the public. As compared to the conservative views of the Jedi, Qui-Gon's beliefs and decisions caused friction among his peers.
Even with this reputation, the Jedi Master is known to be among the very best of the Jedi Order. This is seen in his last apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and how he himself has carried the teachings of his master to become a great Jedi during his lifetime.
What to expect from the Obi-Wan Kenobi cameo
If anything, a cameo like the one Liam Neeson made for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series shouldn't be put to waste. From that moment, until Obi-Wan Kenobi's demise in A New Hope, is a period that spans nine years. It can be used by the brains behind Star Wars and Disney to give the beloved Jedi a chance to interact more with Qui-Gon Jinn as he teaches his former apprentice how to achieve true immortality through the Force.
This is why a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi should be in the pipeline. Although Star Wars should avoid going the Darth Vader route again, there are a lot of great storytelling opportunities that can be used to give Obi-Wan a deserving follow-up. Of course, primary among these is Qui-Gon and how his chemistry with Obi-Wan chemistry can be used to great effect for a potential second season.
If done right, the Star Wars lore can be enhanced by adding more of Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn into the mix. The character has long been loved by Star Wars fans despite his short on-screen history. This is the best chance to correct that by giving more time to shine upon one of the best the Jedi has to offer.
