Jose Mourinho is reportedly set to make a dramatic return to football just months after being released from his last job. The Portuguese manager has been unemployed since January when Roma dismissed him eight months after he led them to victory in the Europa Conference League. At 61, Mourinho has been linked with several jobs in the four months since his dismissal. There have even been rumors of a surprising return to Manchester United. However, according to reports, he is now on the verge of taking over at Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

Sky Italia claims that Mourinho, often referred to as “The Special One,” has reached an agreement to become the head coach of the Super Lig club. The report states that the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has signed a two-year deal with Fenerbahce, with an option for an additional year. Well-known football journalist Fabrizio Romano has also reported this news, adding that Mourinho has accepted the proposal.

Currently, Fenerbahce is managed by Ismail Kartal, who led the team to a second-place finish in the 2023/24 Super Lig season. The news of Mourinho’s potential appointment comes just a day after it was announced that he would be part of TNT Sports' coverage of the Champions League final.

In recent weeks, Mourinho has been linked with numerous positions, including a sporting director role at Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadisiyah. Despite these links, Mourinho has been quiet about his plans. However, he recently shared his thoughts on what he looks for in a new role.

Mourinho's Requirements for His Next Role at Fenerbahce

Mourinho told The Telegraph, “The only thing I want is that the targets and the objectives have to be established by everyone in a fair way. I cannot go to a club where, because of my history, the objective is to win the title. No. The only thing I want is that it has to be fair.”

He emphasized the importance of realistic goals, saying, “Do you think if I was at a big Premier League club and we were sixth, seventh, eighth in the table, I still have a job? What I am saying is people [should] look at me the way they look at others. What is important for me is if the club has objectives and for me to be able to say I am ready to fight for these.”

Mourinho added, “I don’t want to say realistic, but [at least] semi-realistic. Because when I went to Roma nobody was dreaming about European Cup finals and we did it. It’s not possible I go to a club almost relegated and the objective is to win the Champions League. It’s good but it is not fair.”

Mourinho is poised to take the helm at Fenerbahce, bringing his wealth of experience and a clear vision for fair and achievable goals. This move could mark an exciting new chapter for Mourinho and the Turkish club as they aim for success in the Super Lig and beyond.
