The indie dev team Arika, who is best known for their work on the Street Fighter EX series, along with the April Fools joke that eventually turned into a full-fledge project known as “Fighting EX Layer”, has just revealed today that they may be repeating history with a potential new project simply known as “PRAYER TO DEATH”.
Over at their YouTube Channel, a near two-minute trailer was dropped, showcasing very rough footage of the new game, which features only one playable character dueling against themselves in a mirror match, on a stage resembling France with the Arc De Triomphe in the middle of the stage, and the Eiffel tower in the background.
The gameplay shown off in the trailer has a very strong resemblance to mecha action titles like Virtual-On or Gundam Extreme VS, with a battle style that is extremely fast-paced and hard to keep up with at times. The gameplay in the trailer also seems to feature destructible environments, as the Arc De Triomphe could also be seen getting destroyed momentarily before digitally being re-assembled.
Article Continues BelowWhile the description clearly states that the video was made for April Fools, this isn't the first time that Arika made this claim before putting their efforts into full game development. As mentioned above, Fighting EX Layer also started off as an April Fools Joke, but due to an extremely positive response by the fighting game community, they eventually turned their joke into a full game, which is received various updates and ports over the years.
It is very likely that Arika could be testing the waters for a new game once again. This time, however, they're appealing to a much different, considerably more niche audience. Will there be enough interest to convince Arika to go all in? Only time will tell.
Expect more news to be released if PRAYER TO DEATH turns into a full product.
