Paradox Interactive has a way with its large games and piecemeal expansions. While most other game companies would make a game and take away features to sell as DLC, Paradox always releases a full game and creates DLC for it after. This leads to very strong foundations, supplemented by essential content that you can't get back from once you've played it at least once. CK3 Royal Court is no different. The base CK3 game is already a magnificent game that allows you to role-play as a dynasty of monarchs, but Royal Court adds a lot of new content that makes the base game feel lacking. Royal Court doesn't only give the game a visual update and aesthetic changes with its new throne room system – it also improves the core gameplay and adds a lot of new interesting ways to play. Here are the new features that come with the CK3 Royal Court DLC:

  • Throne Room: A visual representation of your royal court will reflect all the accumulated majesty and prestige of your dynasty.
  • Hold Court: Interact with vassals and courtiers as they come to you with their problems, seeking a royal judgment.
  • Grandeur: Increase the quality of life at your court with fancier trappings and better food, all the better to impress your rivals and attract higher quality guests.
  • Inspired People: Talented artists, craftspeople and thinkers can work on new projects, adding treasures and artifacts to your court.
  • Hybrid Cultures: Make the most of a multicultural realm, developing a new way of life that is specifically adapted to your population and geography.
  • Cultural Divergence: Split from your traditional culture, adapting it into something new that better fits your aspirations.

IGN's review for the game was enormously positive, giving the DLC a rating of 9/10, saying: “Royal Court goes beyond tacking on some new mechanics to the already excellent Crusader Kings 3. It weaves iron into the very fibers of the base game and makes it feel more complete and cohesive. And rather than focus on one region, all the pillars and ethoses added by the new culture system make it feel like a flavor pack for the entire world. It's the best kind of grand strategy expansion, and while it leaves dukes and tribal rulers feeling a bit left out in the rain as they can't access most of these new systems, I wouldn't want to ever play without it.
