AFK players, leavers, and quitters get their fair share of penalties from League of Legends (LOL). Since Patch 10.24 last November 2020, Riot Games have taken measures to combat these griefing behaviors. According to one of the devs' tweets, these penalties will be stiffer in the upcoming Patch 11.3.
BIGGER PENALTIES FOR AFK PLAYERS IN LOL
According to League of Legends Gameplay Design Director Mark “Scruffy” Yetter, more penalties are coming to griefers. In a tweet, Scruffy says that AFK players and leavers will be receiving harsher punishment moving forward.
PSA – in 11.3 we added additional LP penalties for AFKing or leaving games. Repeatedly AFKing will ramp this penalty up over time.
With a little more skin in the game, hopefully a potential leaver will think twice about ruining a game for their team.

Of course, there are times that players will have to leave because of an emergency. Sometimes, an unexpected event such as energy blackouts or (god forbid) coffee spills on their keyboards can lead to players quitting the game. Naturally, Riot Games don't want to punish this occasional and innocent behavior. However, repeat offenses will “ramp this penalty up over time.”
Article Continues BelowSince November last year, Riot has been taking steps in combating griefing in LOL. Meanwhile, they've also put up safeguards for affected players. A safety net is put out to prevent players from losing rank just because of a griefing teammate. Since then, Riot has been improving its behavioral systems to make the LOL community a better place to be. This upcoming change will deter players from leaving their matches, hence lead to an overall better experience for players.
Or is it really better? Have there been times when you would rather play 4v5 rather than tolerate that one griefing teammate? Whichever is the case, Riot hopes that the changes they make will lead to a healthier community, with less toxicity and flaming between teammates.
