Usually, game save data disappears because of players' carelessness or because of bugs in the game's code. However, players in the Rust community in Europe lost theirs for an entirely different reason. A fire that consumed an OVHCloud data center caused 25 game servers to get Rust save files deleted.

RUST SAVE FILES DELETED AFTER FIRE FRIED DATA CENTER

Rust‘s Twitter account first reported the data loss yesterday, saying that all data will not be restorable. The succeeding tweets would show Rust reporting servers returning online, possibly having replaced the affected servers over the past day.

Rust later clarified that the data lost due to the fire only included player progression on 25 servers. Needless to say, a lot of players didn't feel too happy with this news. Some players even demanded the developers send them redeemable codes. Many players complained that the developers didn't do enough to make sure that they backed up players' data.

As of the moment, Rust has restored the following servers:

The bad news is, in spite of the servers returning online, players will have to start over their progress in these servers.

FIRE CONSUMED ONE WHOLE DATA CENTER, AFFECTING ONE OTHER

OVHCloud founder Octave Klaba started a Twitter thread to report on the fires. He stated that the fire started on the SBG 2 data center, putting SBG 1-4 at risk. The firemen responded immediately but were not able to save SBG 2. A portion of SBG 1 got affected, while the firemen were able to secure SBG 3 from harm. Among the four data centers, SBG 4 faced the least threat.

Following the fire reports, Klaba immediately urged customers to activate their Disaster Recovery Plan. Apart from Rust servers, multiple European websites also reported a loss of service.
