After many years in the gaming scene, two 3D fighting games have always been seen as close rivals to each other. Virtua Fighter, which started back in 1993, was the template for many other 3D fighting games that came after it. A year after, Tekken, which used Virtua Fighter as its main inspiration was then released. Since then, both games have had their ups and downs within the fighting game scene, and both are still alive and kicking today.
But finally, after many years apart, Virtua Fighter and Tekken are finally crossing paths in the form of a costume collaboration event in Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown. In this event, players will be able to suit up the Bajiquan master, Akira Yuki, with an outfit similar to Mishima-Ryu style Karate expert, Kazuya Mishima. Alternatively, players will also be able to dress up Lau Chan, the Koen-ken master with an outfit similar to Heihachi Mishima, the master of Mishima-Ryu style Karate.
Article Continues BelowWhile the overall reception to the collaboration event has been positive, some fans have expressed disappointment as fans of both Virtua Fighter and Tekken were expecting something more than just a few new outfits. Much rather, fans are hoping that one day the two games will truly cross over with a collaboration title, very similar to other titles such as Street Fighter X Tekken. Despite Tekken being a much more popular game, Katsuhiro Harada, the game producer, and director behind the Tekken series has expressed several times that the Tekken series has taken a lot of influences from Virtua Fighter in the early days, and the Tekken series may not have existed if it wasn't for Virtua Fighter.
While the creation of a Virtua Fighter X Tekken game may still be a long way away, having a collaboration event in this fashion is a very good sign that Sega and Bandai Namco are on good terms, so a fully-fledged cross over game is still very much a possibility.
