The new running back for the New York Giants wants fans to know he can be a very dynamic player. Giants rusher Devin Singletary believes he can be just as productive as former Giant Saquon Barkley, who left the team this offseason.

“I feel like I’m a playmaker like him, so … I’m just gonna be me,” Singletary said, per the New York Post. Singletary joined the Giants this offseason after rushing for the Houston Texans last season.

Singletary could be the Giants' top ball carrier

Singletary spent only one season in Houston, where he helped the team make a surprising playoff run. He finished the 2023 campaign with a career-high 898 yards rushing. He rushed for 4 touchdowns, while carrying the ball 216 times. His rushing attempt totals were also the highest he ever had in the NFL.

The Giants need Singletary to continue that production in 2024. The team is breaking in a lot of new players on offense this season, who will need to gel together fast. The Giants also have a rookie target at receiver in Malik Nabers, and newcomer Theo Johnson is likely the top tight end. New York is hoping that these new additions will help the team march back to the NFC Playoffs, where they haven't been regularly since Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning were still around.

Singletary has 4,049 career rushing yards in the NFL, on 888 carries. He has played for the Texans and the Buffalo Bills. Despite being a 5-foot-7 back, he runs hard and with power. He has 20 career rushing touchdowns in the league.

“You’re getting a dog, you’re getting somebody that’s ready to work, and I’m gonna bring it week in and week out,” Singletary added, in a special message to Giants fans.

What the Giants lost in Barkley

Giants fans got the difficult news this offseason that long-time rusher Saquon Barkley was leaving. It hurt even harder when Barkley ended up with the Philadelphia Eagles, a bitter rival. Barkley had put up solid numbers in his six seasons in the Big Apple. The running back rushed for 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns during his New York tenure.

Barkley was a fan favorite in New York. He had played his entire career with the team, after getting drafted by the Giants as the second overall selection in the 2018 Draft. He was born in the Bronx borough of New York City, but grew up in Pennsylvania. Barkley won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2018.

Giants fans will possibly give him a warm welcome when the Eagles come to town later this season. Or, they might boo him. First, the team has to get through minicamp and then training camp. The team's minicamp continues Tuesday, and ends on Thursday.
