The football world was abuzz late last month when reports emerged that star safety Landon Collins had cleaned out his locker at the New York Giants' facility. Was it a sign that the three-time Pro Bowler would continue his career elsewhere going forward? Or simply another example of ever-inquisitive fans reading too much into something completely innocuous.

Just over two weeks later, we have our answer.

Collins posted a farewell message to the Giants on twitter Tuesday, confirming the assumption that he will indeed sign with a new team in free agency this offseason.

“I want to thank the Giants organization for believing in me and allowing me to have 4 great years in NY,” he wrote. “I can’t express how great it was to play with my teammates and in one of the greatest cities in the world. I will forever cherish my time in the blue and white and the relationships I have built in the building and in my community. Now on to the next chapter….”

New York reportedly informed Collins on Monday that it would not use the franchise tag on him this season. Last month, word broke that Collins was uninterested in playing on a high-dollar, single-season deal, instead seeking a multi-year contract that would provide him with more financial security.

The 25-year-old will enter free agency as one of the top safeties on the market along with Earl Thomas and Tyrann Mathieu. Considering his youth, size, and versatility, though, don't be surprised if Collins is the highest-paid safety to come off the board this offseason.
