The New York Giants are still optimistic that draft pick Corey Ballentine will make a full recovery after being shot last weekend, and the hope is that he can join team workouts next Monday according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.

Ballentine isn't attending rookie minicamp this weekend because the Giants encouraged him to stay in Kansas to celebrate the life of Dwane Simmons, who was killed in the shooting.

Giants coach Pat Shurmur is disappointed in the situation but not with Ballentine rather that he was a victim of an unfortunate crime.

“I am really disappointed that he was the victim of a crime,” Giants coach Pat Shurmur said. “He is a great young man. We got to know him really well through the draft process. My son [quarterback Kyle Shurmur] trained with him at EXOS, so I had some knowledge of what a great man he is. It is very unfortunate that he was a victim of a crime. That could happen to any of us. We are here for him. He is going through the vigils and the funerals, the things that he has to go through.

“We are here to support him as he comes back to us. We are just here for him. Thoughts and prayers go his way.”

Shurmur also said it's unique that a draft pick isn't there for rookie camp but life comes first and pointed out they don't play a real game until September and it's only May. It's good news to hear that Ballentine is still on his way to a full recovery and hopefully he can join the team after this weekend.
