The New York Giants have had a difficult time righting the ship in recent seasons. They have gone through a number of head coaches, including Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo, Pat Shurmur and most recently Joe Judge. None of those coaches lasted longer than two seasons.
Well, it appears they have found their next head football coach. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Giants are closing in on hiring Brian Daboll.
Daboll was the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator from 2018 through this past season. He is credited with helping the growth and emergence of superstar quarterback Josh Allen. Daboll helped the offense become one of the most explosive units in the NFL over the last couple seasons.
The Bills were third in the NFL in scoring offense and fifth in total offense this season.
However, the season came to a crashing half last weekend vs. the Kansas City Chiefs. The loss was in no part due to Allen or Daboll's efforts, as the Bills scored 36 points. Buffalo's typically stout defense gave up the game, allowing a 44-yard drive in 10 seconds to force overtime. Everyone knows the rest.
The Giants already hired a new general manager, Joe Schoen this offseason. Schoen spent the last three seasons with Daboll in Buffalo. Their previous working relationship made this a strong possibility.
The Giants defense was a decent unit in 2021. The offense on the other hand has been a disaster. They dealt with a ton of injuries at wide receiver and tailback the last couple of years. Daniel Jones has shown little to inspire confidence. But maybe Daboll can help turn the offense around.
