Variety is reporting that Gladiator 2 will resume filming in Malta on December 4. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, filming was paused while the film was in the middle of production. After 118 days, the SAG-AFTRA strike ended and productions were able to resume.

It's great news for those anticipating the long-awaited sequel from Scott. Mescal, who's fresh off of an Oscar nomination for his performance in Aftersun, is set to lead the film. Denzel Washington will also star alongside The Mandalorian and The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal.

Gladiator was a huge hit in 2000. It grossed over $500 million and received a dozen Oscar nominations. It won five awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe. Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, Richard Harris, and Oliver Reed also starred in the film.

The sequel will follow Commodus' (Joaquin Phoenix) nephew, Lucius (Paul Mescal), and his journey as a grown man. Nielsen, Jacobi, and Hounsou are all reprising their roles in the Gladiator sequel. Also making their franchise debuts are Stranger Things' Joseph Quinn, Moon Knight star May Calamawy, and The White Lotus' Fred Hechinger.

Ridley Scott is fresh off of the release of his latest historical epic, Napoleon. The film re-teamed with Phoenix after working on Gladiator in 2000. It tells the rise of the titular emperor through the eyes of Empress Joséphine (Vanessa Kirby). The film is over-performing, grossing $79 million to date.
