Serious amount of money is on the line this week at the 2021 Genesis Invitational, which has a total purse of $9.3 million. That's the biggest sum in a tournament so far this year on the PGA Tour. Last week, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am had a total prize of $7.8 million, with Daniel Berger pocketing a share of $1.404 million for his victory at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

For the Genesis Invitational, the winner will be walking straight into the bank after all is said and done at the Riviera Country Club to encash a cheque worth $1.674 million. Unlike in previous editions of the tournament, the Genesis Invitational's purse this year has not gotten a bump, which means the breakdown would look identical to the one in 2020 when Adam Scott won the event by two strokes over Scott Brown, Kang Sun-hoon, and Matt Kuchar.

Nevertheless, that's a whole lot of money, especially when it's compared to the prize given to the original winner of this tournament, which was previously known as the Los Angeles Open. Harry Copper won the inaugural Los Angeles Open in 1926 and pocketed $3,500 for his victory.

The purse would hit the $1 million mark for the first time ever in the tournament's history several decades later in 1989. That year, Mark Calcavecchia won the Nissan Los Angeles Open and got rewarded $180,000 for his success.

The first player to win a $1 million in tournament history? That would be Phil Mickelson. Lefty bagged $1.116 million in 2008, a year after he finished runner up to Charles Howell.
