NBA fans were given a treat on Tuesday night, as the Memphis Grizzlies and Minnesota Timberwolves put on a show. In what was a back-and-forth affair, the Grizzlies found themselves tied with a couple seconds remaining, inbounding side out. Memphis superstar Ja Morant took the inbounds pass, made a move and hit an incredibly athletic and agile layup with one second left. The shot proved to be the difference, as the Grizzlies won Game 5, 111-109.
Morant scored the team's final 13 points of the game, with a mix of free throws, jumpers and layups. After the game, Morant addressed the media regarding his performance Tuesday. His reaction should bring smiles to Grizzlies fans everywhere.
“As long as I win, I don't care about my stats,” Morant said. He might not care about his stats, but that hasn't stopped him from doing some really special things on the basketball court.
He finished Game 5 with 30 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists, three steals and the Dunk of the Year.
Morant talked about his job as a distributor. He repeatedly referenced that his job is always to make the right play. Earlier in the series, the Timberwolves took away passing lane and did not allow him to find his Grizzlies teammates. But over the last three games, Minnesota has thrown bodies at him. He shooting percentage has plummeted as a result.
But that did not stop him from continuing to make the right play. Morant's ability to find teammates in the half-court, or take over offensively is a spectacle to watch. The NBA's Most Improved Player exhibited exactly why he won that award tonight.
