Yesterday, the official Indianapolis Colts X page posted a picture of linebacker Zaire Franklin throwing up the hand sign for his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. Labeling the photo with the caption “Throw your 4s up.” Many people were outraged because, although Franklin’s number is 44, that is not what the hand sign represented.

Many people viewed the post as tone-death, as it showed that whoever posted the photo was unaware of certain Black culture and customs. The post sparked further outrage as it was posted on Juneteenth, a holiday that marks the ending of slavery in the United States. A holiday that is sacred to Black people native to the United States. Fans went to X to express their thoughts on the post.

“It’s essential to have black creatives somewhere on your creative and social team…” X user @jaydynjenaya noted.

“This stuff really isn’t that difficult man. He’s not throwing up 4’s. He’s a part of Omega Psi Phi. It’s a historically black fraternity. Asking the athletes these questions before posting is important, welcomed, and necessary if you don’t know these things,” posted @Dom_Palumbo9.

“I feel like atp it’s intentional. This makes the third time an @NFL team got a NPHC Divine 9 org hand sign/symbol wrong and labeled it something it wasn’t lmao smh. @Colts like BFFR” shared @andreharris89.

“In the day and age of social media… am I the only person that thinks this was done on purpose? How many adult White people left in the US that don’t know about BGLOs? I don’t buy it,” @Coach_Moore_CG wrote.

Franklin even quoted the original tweet with pictures of himself in his fraternity paraphernalia during his undergraduate days. He captioned the tweet, “For those wondering, yes I am a four dawg”. Franklin crossed the Kappa chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., during his time at Syracuse University.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University on November 17, 1911, by three undergraduates: Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, and Frank Coleman. Joined by their faculty advisor, Ernest Everett Just. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. has over 250,000 members, both domestically and internationally. With over 700 chapters worldwide.

This isn’t the first time Franklin has had to address the customs of fraternity. A video of Franklin hopping to Atomic Dog during practice went viral last year. Many people called what Franklin was doing dancing. He later explained on his podcast, The Trenches Show, that what he was doing wasn’t dancing; it was hopping. A style of movement that is sacred to the fraternity.
