During its opening weekend, Pixar's Inside Out 2 grossed $295 million worldwide, the highest box office debut of any 2024 movie. $155 million came domestically with another $140 million coming from overseas markets. This is a record-breaking development for animated movies during a slow 2024 box office.

Disney reported the box office success. With Inside Out 2's $295 million box office haul, it is the highest opening ever for an animated movie (using “current exchange rates and in like-for-like markets).

Even with that clarification, the Pixar sequel shattered expectations. It was tracking for a $80-$90 million opening at the domestic box office. The film ended up making over $50 million more than expected.

The first Inside Out movie made $90 million domestically during its opening weekend. During its theatrical run, the movie made nearly $860 million worldwide. Its sequel has a real shot of eclipsing that number.

A much-needed win for the 2024 box office

2024 has been a rough year at the box office. Movies like The Fall Guy ($169 million), IF ($173 million), and Furiosa ($160 million) did not meet their expectations. Sometimes, franchise filmmaking gets a bad rap, but evidently, sequels are generally moneymakers in 2024.

With its opening weekend alone, Inside Out 2 has already become the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2024 domestically. It beat out movies that have already gone through its entire theatrical run such as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire ($113 million) and Bob Marley: One Love ($85.8 million).

The movie only narrowly trails behind Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($157.8 million), which is still in theaters. Only Dune: Part Two ($282.1 million), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($196.3 million), and Kung Fu Panda 4 ($193 million) have made more at the domestic box office.

Similarly, at the worldwide box office, the same five movies take over the top five spots. Dune: Part Two reigns supreme after making $711 million worldwide during its theatrical release. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($567 million), Kung Fu Panda 4 ($543 million), and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($374 million) follow.

If Inside Out 2 makes more than its predecessor when it's all said and done, the sequel could become the highest-grossing movie of 2024.

What is Inside Out 2 about?

Inside Out 2 is directed by Kelsey Mann (in his directorial debut) and based on a script from Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein. LeFauve co-wrote the first movie's script with Pete Docter and Josh Cooley.

Picking up a couple of years after the events of the first movie, Riley (Kensington Tallman) is now a teenager hitting puberty. This sends the team of emotions into a frenzy. Joy (Amy Poehler) was running a relatively smooth operation before puberty hit.

Meanwhile, Riley is stressing about her high school career. She learns that her best friends won't be at the same high school. So, when they all attend a hockey camp, Riley has to choose between sticking with her old friends or impressing the varsity team.

Hitting puberty means new emotions entering the fray. Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Fear (Tony Hale) are back from the first movie. However, they are joined by Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser).

The two can't co-exist, and the OG emotions are sent on a mission to the back of Riley's head. They need to recover her Sense of Self.
