The Jacksonville Jaguars made a change under center this Sunday with Cody Kessler replacing Blake Bortles. However, it appears head coach Doug Marrone does not plan on keeping it that way.

The move has raised speculation regarding which quarterback will get the start moving forward. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Marrone is sticking with Bortles:

“I spoke to both quarterbacks this afternoon and told them that Blake will be our team’s starting quarterback. I believe this gives us the best opportunity to win.”

The decision may come as a bit of a surprise. Bortles has struggled throughout the entire 2018 NFL season and it finally culminated with his benching in Week 7. He completed 6-of-12 passes for 61 yards while leading the offense to zero points. As a result, Marrone finally pulled the trigger on making a change albeit briefly.

Meanwhile, Kessler completed 21-of-30 passes for 156 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Although there was no drastic change in the performance on offense, he certainly fared much better than Bortles did. This led many to believe that the Jaguars would decide to make it a permanent change, however, that does not seem to be the case.

While Bortles may have secured his job for another game, it is safe to assume that he will be on a short leash moving forward. Aside from their struggles under center, there are reports about the growing frustration in Jacksonville as a whole. Their once formidable defense has become one of the most generous groups in the league over the last few weeks. They will need to patch things up quickly if they hope to make the playoffs this year.
