Urban Meyer finally logged his first win in the NFL on Saturday after guiding the Jacksonville Jaguars to their first victory in the last 21 games. The Jags escaped with a 23-20 win over the Miami Dolphins and it was thanks in large part to a crucial game-winning play in the dying seconds of the match.
After the game, Meyer shared the details behind the play that led to a much-needed win for Jacksonville:
“That's something that Darrell Bevell brought to us and we practiced that,” Meyer said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. “It's called a slider — either slider timeout, slider kill. They say it's six seconds, five seconds [needed to execute it]. It's hard to get that done.”
Meyer quickly deflected the praise as he singled out offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell as the genius behind that game-winning play. With the Jaguars on fourth-and-8 from Miami's 44-yard line, it looked like they were going for a Hail Mary pass. Instead, they pulled off the “slider” which involved Trevor Lawrence dishing out a quick nine-yard pass. This allowed Meyer to call a timeout with just one second on the clock. Matthew Wright then won the game for the Jags with a 35-yard field goal as time expired.
It was a huge play and an undeniably huge win for the Jaguars. For his part, Meyer admitted that this prompted quite a celebration from the team in the locker room:
“I really enjoyed that locker room after the game,” Meyer said. “I think I enjoyed that more than the actual game.”
Both Meyer and the Jaguars are not exactly in a great place right now with all the off-field drama bogging down the team. This win definitely goes a long way for them.
