The Jacksonville Jaguars may be in the market for a new quarterback, but that doesn't mean they are cutting Blake Bortles loose. Not yet, anyway.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jaguars have no plans of releasing Bortles on Friday. This does not mean Bortles will be in Jacksonville in 2019, but the Jags would obviously like to make sure they find a signal-caller before parting ways with Bortles.
This past season, Bortles started 12 games and actually lost his job to Cody Kessler in the second half of the year before eventually winning it back. He threw for 2,718 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while completing 60.3 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 79.8.
The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Central Florida, was originally selected by the Jaguars with the third overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.
He made 13 starts during his rookie campaign, throwing for 2,908 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 17 picks while completing 58.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 69.5.
The following year, Bortles showed significant improvement, finishing with 4,428 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions, recording a completion percentage of 58.6 percent and a passer rating of 88.2.
Bortles then had a mediocre season in 2016 before throwing for 3,687 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 2017, leading the Jaguars to a 10-win campaign and the AFC Championship Game.
The Oviedo, Fl. native was actually fairly impressive during Jacksonville's playoff run, leading many to believe that he was, in fact, the Jags' quarterback of the future, but his abysmal 2018 campaign quickly assured everyone that was not the case.
