Head coach Robert Saleh and the New York Jets are currently in the midst of what figures to be a highly important offseason as for the future direction of the franchise. The Jets suffered through a disastrous 2023 season that was essentially ended three places into the campaign when newly traded for quarterback Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles, and Saleh ultimately ended up rotating through a Motley crew of quarterbacks to lead an offense that was among the league's worst throughout the season.

All of the struggles have put the Jets under a large microscope heading into 2024-25, a season in which Rodgers is expected to be back and healthy and the Jets as a whole will be expected to perform at a much higher level than they did last year. There have been calls at certain points for Saleh to be on the hot seat due to the team's struggles during his tenure thus far, and some names that have been thrown around as potential replacements include former legendary New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who has not since signed with another team after leaving the franchise.

However, one person who isn't buying into that speculation is none other than ESPN sports media personality Mike Greenberg, who hit those rumors with a brutal truth bomb recently on ESPN's The Pat McAfee Show.

“There is nothing on planet earth less likely to happen, Aaron Rodgers is more likely to get vaccinated on national television and hold a special than Bill Belichick is to accept the coaching job of the New York Jets. Bill Belichick for anyone that knows him, hates the Jets,” said Greenberg, via Pat McAfee on X, the social media platform formerly referred to as Twitter. “…I do think Bill will be back in coaching next year, I do think the job he’d love to have is the Giants if that doesn’t go well for them this year, so maybe he’s back in the building. There is no way Belichick would come back as coach of the Jets, I’d be surprised as that as anything that’s ever happened.”

An interesting history

Belichick and the New York Jets do indeed have quite the storied history, albeit not in a particularly positive way. Belichick actually took the Jets head coaching job way back in 2000 only to resign after one day, which ignited a fued between himself and the franchise, one that would continue as he tortured the Jets throughout the entirety of his tenure with the Patriots, which netted six Super Bowl championships for that organization.

Of course, there isn't a ton of reason to believe that Robert Saleh is indeed actually on the hot seat or if that is speculation on the part of the team's notoriously impatient fanbase. However, if the Jets stumble out of the gates in 2024, it wouldn't be a surprise if those rumors start to gain traction.

In any case, the Jets' season will start with a major test vs the San Francisco 49ers in early September in prime time.
