The New York Jets were dealt a major blow on Sunday when veteran wide receiver Corey Davis exited the game against the Eagles with an injury. He did not return to the field, and the latest reports suggest he won't be suiting up for Gang Green for a long time yet.
Head Coach Robert Saleh announced on Monday that Davis is set to undergo core muscle surgery which will put an end to his 2021 season.
The loss of Davis will be felt by the entire Jets' offense, as the veteran was the team's second-most targeted player, and ranked third on the offense with 34 receptions. Davis had 492 yards and four touchdowns in his first season as a Jet, which will come to an end after just nine games.
Davis entered the Week 13 matchup vs. the Eagles nursing a groin injury. He was questionable heading into the game but was deemed ready to take the field before kickoff. He reaggravated the persisting injury, which had previously held him out of the team's clash with the Texans in Week 12, and was forced to leave the game early.
With Davis' season over, quarterback Zach Wilson's job will become even more difficult. After an inspiring performance in Week 13, he'll now go the rest of the way without one of his most reliable weapons.
Davis signed a three-year, $37.5 million deal with the Jets in the offseason, so he'll be focused on getting right ahead of the 2022 season, by which point, hopefully, the Jets as a whole will look like a more formidable bunch.
