LeBron James (left calf contusion) has been ruled out of the Los Angeles Lakers' matchup with the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night at Crypto.com Arena. LeBron was initially listed as questionable.

James injured his calf in a collision with Kevin Durant at the 4:22 mark of the first quarter of the Lakers' in-season tournament win over the Phoenix Suns on Friday. LeBron had his leg stretched out on the Lakers' bench before returning to start the second quarter.

“It never loosened up,” LeBron recalled later. “Pretty much locked up right then and there. So I tried to keep my composure, make sure I was OK, and try to keep it stretched out and as loose as possible and play the game and be effective.”

Despite the injury, LeBron finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists, while shooting 11-for-17 from the field and 3-for-4 from deep. He played the entire fourth quarter.

“Pretty sore right now,” LeBron acknowledged after leading the Lakers to victory. “Obviously, because the adrenaline is calming down and iced it, now it's pretty sore.”

It'll be LeBron's first missed game of the 2023-24 regular season. The 21-year veteran is averaging 25.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 5.4 assists in 35.0 minutes through his first nine games. He's shooting 56.9% from the field, 34.8% from 3, and has been among the most clutch players in the NBA. The Lakers have a -29.7 net rating with LeBron off the floor.

LeBron joins Jarred Vanderbilt (heel), Gabe Vincent (knee), and Jalen Hood-Schifino (knee) on the Lakers' injury report. James and the 4-5 Lakers have expressed frustration with the turnstile of injuries that have made it challenging for the Lakers' to develop cohesion early in the season.

The good news for the Lakers: Anthony Davis is available for the Blazers game. He missed Wednesday's game with hip spasms but returned to action on Friday.
