The Detroit Lions continue to beef up their roster this offseason, and they are doing it not only via free agency. On Monday, the team agreed to a deal to acquire cornerback Carlton Davis from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In acquiring Davis from the Buccaneers, the Lions are trading the second of their third-round picks in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. Detroit will also be getting Tampa Bay's 2024 and 2025 sixth-round picks in the deal, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Considering that Davis is entering the final year of his contract and is due $14.5 million in 2024, it only makes sense for the Buccaneers to move him now instead of paying him or potentially losing him for nothing.

As for the Lions, they are able to address one of their greatest, if not their biggest roster need this offseason in trading for Carlton Davis. Detroit's secondary help, particularly at the cornerback position, was a huge issue for the team throughout the 2024 campaign. They had to shuffle at cornerback in an attempt to fix the problem, but nothing really worked that would warrant a permanent solution.

In Davis, the Lions get a player who started in all the 12 games he was healthy enough to play in for the Buccaneers in 2023. The 27-year-old CB also tallied two interceptions, along with nine passes defended and 52 combined tackles.

Davis is expected to be a starter for the Lions in 2024, and considering his contract situation, Detroit might have conversations with him on a possible extension as they look to continue their 2023 success.
