The Detroit Lions' front office still has its sleeve rolled up, knowing there's plenty of work left to do in preparation for the 2023 NFL season. In one of their most recent moves, the Lions have made adjustments to the contract of edge rusher Romeo Okwara, as reported by Field Yates of ESPN.

By reworking Okwara's contract, the player's cap hit has gone from $14.5 million to just $5.647 million in 2023.

Okwara was initially claimed off the waivers by the Lions in 2018 shortly after he was released by the New York Giants. He would sign a two-year deal with Detroit in 2019 worth $6.8 million and ink an extension in 2021 for three years, $37 million.

The 27-year-old Okwara is entering the final year of that extension deal, and the reported adjustments to his cap hit suggest that he will remain with the Lions for at least one more season.

Okwara has some sort of unfinished business in Detroit as he appeared in only five games in the 2022 season due to an injury he suffered in 2021, during which he appeared in just four contests.

When healthy, Okwara is one of the best Lions players on defense. The last time he played a full season, he recorded 10 sacks , 44 combined tackles, and 11 tackles for losses across 16 games (nine starts) back in the 2020 NFL campaign.

Missing Okwara for most of the 2022 season, the Lions' stop unit struggled to get to opposing quarterbacks. They were just 18th in the league overall with only a 6.51 defensive sack rate and last with 245.8 passing yards allowed per game.
