The Detroit Lions have swooped in and grabbed one of the top defensive free agents left on the board. And it brings another massive addition to their secondary.

The Lions are in agreement with former Philadelphia Eagles safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Gardner-Johnson will sign a one-year, $8 million contract.

The move represents the third addition to Detroit's secondary in free agency. The Lions signed cornerbacks Cam Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley earlier in the week.

Gardner-Johnson and the Eagles originally discussed a multi-year contract at the beginning of free agency. However, a deal never materialized, and Philadelphia spent big to retain James Bradberry and Darius Slay.

Gardner-Johnson joined the Eagles through an offseason trade from the New Orleans Saints. He shined last year, racking up a career-high six interceptions and 67 tackles in 12 games.

Gardner-Johnson helped Philadelphia into the playoffs, and they went on a deep run. The Eagles represented the NFC in the Super Bowl back in February, though they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Prior to his season in Philly, the new Lions safety spent three years with the Saints. New Orleans drafted him in the fourth round in 2019, and he started 31 games for the team before being traded.

This agreement with the Detroit Lions is a bit of a reunion of sorts, as well. Gardner-Johnson was in New Orleans around the time Lions head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn were coaching there. In fact, Glenn coached the Saints' secondary when Gardner-Johnson was there.

This is a huge move for the Lions who have aspirations of winning the NFC North in 2023. This deal takes the team one step closer to achieving that goal.
