The Detroit Lions were embarrassed by the San Francisco 49ers for most of Sunday's Week 1 affair. The 49ers led 41-17 after punting the ball away with just under six minutes to play, and everybody assumed the game would end without any fireworks.

Instead, the Lions fought back in valiant fashion, scoring 16 unanswered points in the matter of minutes to make it a 41-33 game with just over a minute to play. San Francisco then fumbled while trying to run out the clock (George Kittle had just muffed an onside kick earlier), giving Detroit one final shot.

Jared Goff drove Detroit down the field and got them all the way to the 24-yard line, only to fall short. Still, even though the Lions lost, they covered based on the closing line at most places. Given how terrible they looked for much of the game, pulling off that backdoor cover is almost a win it itself. Almost.

There are very low expectations surrounding the Lions this season, with many expecting them to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. Their defense certainly looks like it's going to be one of the worst in the NFL yet again, but perhaps Jared Goff can use the late comeback as a springboard for a strong season.
