The Georgia State Panthers were the beneficiary of a bracket break. It’s part of the thrill and the unpredictability of this month, when the March Madness odds can — and do — instantly change. Georgia State did not win the Sun Belt Conference’s regular-season championship. The Panthers were not the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Texas State was. The Bobcats, however, were stunned in the quarterfinals by eighth-seeded Louisiana. The bracket immediately opened up, and Louisiana made its way to the final. Georgia State played a No. 8 seed instead of a No. 1 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament final. The Panthers took advantage of the opportunity and made their way to the NCAA Tournament. Of course they deserved the bid, but it’s simply noteworthy that the bracket opened up for them. It certainly helped, something to remember when you make a Georgia State Gonzaga prediction.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs are the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, a testament to how strong and durably great this program has become under coach Mark Few. Some people will say that Gonzaga wouldn’t be nearly as good in a power conference, but they obviously are ignoring the point that the West Coast Conference has three at-large bids, the same as the Pac-12. The ACC was way down this year; only Duke was an especially strong team in that particular power conference. Of course Gonzaga would thrive in any conference it joined, if we were to engage in hypotheticals. This is an elite team with wins over UCLA, Texas Tech, and several other notable nonconference teams. The Zags are the real deal, something to internalize when you make your Georgia State Gonzaga pick.
One key point to make about Gonzaga in the NCAA Tournament is that the Zags have won more NCAA Tournament games than almost any other school the past six years. Gonzaga has made two national championship games in the past six years, having done so last year and in 2017. Gonzaga made the Elite Eight in 2019, winning three NCAA Tournament games. Gonzaga made the Sweet 16 in 2018. Not many other teams have a track record that good in March the past six years. Anyone who badmouths or talks down Gonzaga’s accomplishments simply isn’t paying attention.
