World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler ended day 1 of the 2022 Masters at Augusta National with a robust score that had him among the leaders at three strokes under par. Little did patrons at the Masters know that they were about to witness history at Augusta on the tournament's second day. Scheffler proceeded to outdo himself, finishing round 2 five shots under par, giving him a five-stroke lead heading into the third round at Augusta. The five-stroke lead puts the world no. 1 in rare Masters company, all but guaranteeing he'll be slipping on the green jacket, as noted by ESPN.

His 5-under 67 matched the low score of the day and gave him a five-shot lead, tying a Masters record after 36 holes. The last four players who led by five shots going into the weekend went on to win. The lone exception was Harry “Lighthorse” Cooper in 1936.

Per ESPN, Scheffler became just the fifth player in Masters history to hold a five-shot lead after 36 holes of play. The last four players to hold such a large lead went on to slip on the green jacket at Augusta.

Of course, a lot can happen in the tournament's final two days, especially given the unpredictable weather conditions of the first couple of days. However, it's beginning to feel like this is Scheffler's time at the Masters.

The 25-year-old, who secured the PGA's number-one ranking after his victory in Match Play at Austin Country Club, has won three of his last five starts.

With two rounds to go, Scheffler will be tough to catch if he can keep up this torrid pace at the Masters.
