After a miserable month of May that saw them go just 9-19, the New York Mets fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-5 on Saturday.

The Mets did their best to rally, scoring four runs in the ninth inning. That included a Pete Alonso home run, which was his 13th of the season.

Alonso was sarcastic after the game, per SNY:

Said the Mets slugger after turning a 10-1 beatdown into a 10-5 loss, “It was really nice to be able to get their closer in the game.”

The Mets have had a tough season, and last Wednesday may have been the peak of misery. Early in the day, Edwin Díaz was placed on the 15-day IL. In the eighth inning against the Dodgers, the Mets gave up six runs to break a 3-3 tie. And the wild afternoon in Flushing was just getting started.

Reliever Jorge Lopez, who contributed to the loss by giving up a two-run homer to Shohei Ohtani, was ejected from the game for arguing a check-swing call. Lopez then threw his glove into the stands, made some ill-advised comments on camera that also suffered from the language barrier and was promptly designated for assignment.

The New York Mets' disappointing season took another scary turn on Wednesday as Pete Alonso left the game after being hit by a pitch.

Alonso avoided a break, instead suffering a bone bruise that kept him from missing a significant chunk of time this season.

Alonso was hit by the pitch in the bottom of the first inning in Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets ended up losing 10-3 as the Dodgers competed the three-game sweep in New York.

Alonso will hit free agency this winter after six seasons with the Mets. They have yet to sign a contract extension and it doesn’t seem all that likely that there’s one on the way, especially with the future in Queens looking worse and worse. With a record of 22-30, New York is off to a worse start than last year and has been passed in the division standings by the Washington Nationals.

If the Mets decide to once again be sellers at the trade deadline, Alonso is one of the many names who are expected to be available. According to reports on the situation, he and the team aren’t seeing eye-to-eye on what his “market value” is going to be, leading to more uncertainty about the Polar Bear's future with the team.

The Mets are currently 24-34 on the season.
