The New York Mets made an early splash in Free Agency on Friday, signing Eduardo Escobar, Mark Canha, and arguably the best outfielder on the market, Starling Marte. After adding offensive pieces, the organization is shifting its focus to pitching and Kevin Gausman is reportedly one of their main targets. In fact, it looks like the Mets could ink the right-hander this weekend. Via SNY's Andy Martino:
As noted, NY has briefly talked to Max Scherzer, but there's been no huge progress in discussions. The Mets are also very interested in Jon Gray, who is another intriguing arm. Gausman would be a solid addition for this team though after he pitched at a Cy Young caliber in 2021 with the San Francisco Giants.
The 30-year-old made his very first All-Star appearance after going 14-6 with a 2.81 ERA in 33 starts. He also struck out an impressive 227 hitters in 192 innings of work. It was easily the best season of his big league career, previously struggling to put together consistent performances.
Just like Marte, the Mets would be getting Gausman at the best possible time where he is fresh off a dominant campaign. They desperately need more arms following Noah Syndergaard's departure while Marcus Stroman's recent social media activity points towards him signing elsewhere this winter. Barring any more injury problems to Jacob deGrom or Carlos Carrasco, the Mets should have no shortage of starters if they do come to an agreement with Gausman.
