The Michigan Wolverines received some positive news ahead of their Week Two matchup with UNLV. Michigan football got off to a strong start to the 2023 season, beating East Carolina by a score of 30-3.

Now, it appears the Wolverines are close to getting some reinforcements in their defensive backfields.

According to co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinksdale, cornerback Will Johnson and safety Rod Moore both took part in Michigan's Tuesday practice earlier this week, signaling that their return to the lineup could be imminent, according to Aaron McMann of MLive.

“They’re getting closer and closer,” said Clinksdale. “The big thing with those guys having the issues that they had is not to rush them back. To make sure they’re comfortable.”

Johnson underwent an offseason scope of his knee after starting a season ago. Moore's injury has not been publicly disclosed.

It's unclear if the pair will be able to give it a go against UNLV. Still, it's safe to assume that Michigan football will still be heavy favorites in the matchup. The Wolverines are currently ranked number two in the nation by the AP after a second straight College Football Playoff appearance a year ago.

The 2022 season ended in frustration for Michigan, as the Wolverines were knocked off in surprise fashion by TCU in the semifinals. Still, the Wolverines figure to be near the top of the standings throughout 2023, even without the services of head coach Jim Harbaugh at the beginning, who is serving a self-imposed suspension to open up the season.

Michigan and UNLV kick off at 3:30 PM on Saturday.
