Why The Mets Could Cover the Spread
The Mets will have one of their better starters on the hill here. Taijuan Walker has been surprisingly solid all season long, putting up a 2.88 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP on the year. He's pitched nicely against good offenses like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies, cementing himself as a good but not great part of this Mets rotation. Walker also has a statistical edge over the Padres in this matchup. San Diego has struggled to hit right-handed pitching all year long, earning a .227 batting average and poor batting stats across the board against righties. Walker should put together another nice outing in this game.
The Padres won't have the same caliber of starter on the mound here. Yu Darvish has struggled to begin his season, earning himself a 4.03 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. Darvish has made some quality starts, but he's been terrible in matchups against good offensive teams. When he faced the San Francisco Giants, Darvish was hammered for nine runs over 1.2 innings of work. When he faced the Atlanta Braves, he allowed five runs over five innings. Now he'll have to match up with one of the best offenses in the league in New York.
Why The Padres Could Cover the Spread
Despite their loss in the first game of this series, the Padres come into this matchup with plenty of momentum. They've won three of their last four contests, with three impressive victories against the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. San Diego's offense has also been pretty effective recently, as they've scored four or more runs in each of their last four contests. The Padres have been playing good baseball as of late, and that shouldn't change in this game.
The venue of this game will give San Diego a big advantage. The Mets have been slightly worse when they play on the road, earning a 19-8 record at home and a 19-11 record anywhere else. New York has also been far less effective offensively when on the road, as they see a drop in batting average, OBP, OPS, and slugging percentage when they're on the road. Darvish has also been considerably better when he's pitched in Petco Park, as he's earned a 1.71 ERA at home and a 5.82 ERA anywhere else.
Final Mets-Padres Pick & Prediction
This game should be close, which means that neither side of the spread is particularly appealing. San Diego's money line is a decent pick, but the under is easily the best pick on the board. Both pitchers should perform well in this game, and both teams possess solid bullpens. Lock in the under and don't look back.
Final Mets-Padres Pick & Prediction: Under: 7.5 (-102)
