The pitching matchup for this game: Lucas Giolito for the White Sox goes against Kyle Hendricks for the Cubs. It's a battle of aces in the Windy City, an obvious case in which the under will be a good play.

Giolito has a 2.57 ERA. The White Sox haven't won any of his starts because the bullpen and the batting order have not helped him out. Hendricks has a 5.47 ERA, but the reality of his performance in 2022 is much more complicated than one number might indicate. Hendricks has given up 15 earned runs so far this season, but 12 of those runs have come in two of his five starts. He has allowed three earned runs in three other starts. He has been very strong when on his game, and very bad when not locked in. Most of his five starts have been good ones, but when he has faltered, he has gotten crushed. This is part of the calculus when considering a White Sox Cubs prediction.

In terms of the fortunes of these two teams, both have struggled to start the season, dragging themselves through an ugly first month of baseball in Chicago. The White Sox were heavy favorites in the American League Central but have endured a team-wide power outage plus a shaky bullpen and plenty of bad defense. The White Sox have been a hard-to-watch team, though they have begun to show signs of an awakening this week with multiple victories. This team is considerably talented, but that skill level hasn't manifested itself very often. With the Minnesota Twins being one of the hottest teams in the American League right now, the White Sox know they have to contain the damage and limit the extent to which the Twins establish an advantage in the Central.

The Cubs are a far cry from the National League pennant contender they were a few years ago. The fire sale which sent fan favorites Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant to other teams has shown that the Cubs aren't serious about winning right now. The performance of this team in the first month of the season indicates that no big turnaround is likely to occur. New outfielder Seiya Suzuki has been spectacular for the Cubs, but his work with the bat and his very sharp eye for the strike zone have not been nearly enough to compensate for a generally weak batting order which has not been able to carry the freight. The Cubs have gotten great work from their bullpen so far this season, but the offense has been painfully limited, and will likely continue to be. This is part of the reality when making your White Sox Cubs pick.

Why The White Sox Could Cover the Spread

The White Sox have begun to play better baseball, beginning with their Monday win over the Angels and their Tuesday win over the Cubs. No one doubts this team's talent. The Sox are capable of overwhelming anyone they play.

Why The Cubs Could Cover the Spread

Kyle Hendricks can shut down a White Sox batting order which has been very impotent for most of the season to date.
