Breaking news surfaced Tuesday morning in the world of baseball. Stunningly, Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar has been suspended 162 games (a full season) for testing positive for PEDs for the second time. Jeff Passan was on the news as always.
Last season, Profar played only 80 games after testing positive for the first time. In 2024 with the San Diego Padres, Profar hit 24 home runs and drove in 85 runs with a .839 OPS. Those are all career highs. In 2025, Profar hit only 14 homers and 43 RBIs in 80 games.
This is difficult news for the Braves, as this is a team that has dealt with many brutal injuries and distractions over the last couple of years since they last won a World Series in 2021.
The Braves will need to bring in another outfielder or designated hitter for the 2026 season. Profar was expected to be the DH this season; however, the team may need more depth in the outfield. Ronald Acuna Jr will be in right field, Michael Harris II in center, and Mike Yastrzemski in left field. Eli White is projected to be the backup. Former Padre and teammate of Profar, Jose Azocar, is a depth piece for the Braves and could emerge on the Opening Day roster if the Braves go that direction. Don't be shocked if the Braves try to sign someone. They had Alex Verdugo last season, but he recently signed a minor league contract with the Friars.
Stay tuned for more information about the suspension of Profar. There is a good chance he has played his last game in MLB, as teams (including the Braves) will be hesitant to bring back a two-time offender. As a result of the suspension, Profar will not be playing for Team Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic starting on Thursday.
