It feels like ages ago that the Chicago Cubs were celebrating a combined no-hitter against the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers, which moved them to 42-33 on the season as they fought at the top of the NL Central. The Cubs haven't won a game since, dropping a 10th straight game in embarrassing fashion on Monday night at Wrigley Field against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Chicago lost 13-3, with the game getting really out of hand in the later innings thanks to a six-run eighth inning by Philadelphia. With the game turning into a blowout, Cubs manager David Ross turned to utility man Eric Sogard to pitch in the top of the ninth inning.
Position players pitching is often a novelty, but it has been happening more and more this season. In fact, Sogard is no stranger to the mound, as this was the third time he has pitched during this 10-game losing streak and the fifth time he has pitched this season. Folks, that's bad and very embarrassing:
Wow, infielder Eric Sogard with his 5th appearance of the season for the Cubs, 3rd during what is about to be a 10 game losing streak. That's not a good thing.

Per @ESPNStatsInfo: Eric Sogard's 5 appearances as a pitcher this season are already the most in a CAREER by a Cubs position player over the last 100 seasons.

Sogard gave up three runs in the top of the ninth inning, including two home runs. Shockingly, these were the first runs given up by Sogard in his five appearances. The awful outing pushed his ERA to 6.23 in 4 1/3 innings pitched. It was the perfect embarrassment to cap off another terrible performance by Chicago:
The Cubs have lost 10 in a row, second most consecutive losses in a season this century.
They've scored first in the last 5 games. First time they've done that and lost 5 consecutive games since 1998.

The Cubs are in total free-fall and now sit in third place in the NL Central, 8.5 games behind the first-place Brewers. With the trade deadline coming up at the end of July, Chicago will now likely be looking to sell instead of being buyers. It has been quite the dive over these last couple of weeks, and it's probably going to send the Cubs into rebuild mode.
Chicago will try to temporarily end this embarrassment against Philly on Tuesday.
