Chicago White Sox star and reigning American League MVP Jose Abreu appears to have avoided major injuries following a scary collision with Kansas City Royals utility man Hunter Dozier on Friday afternoon.
The White Sox announced Abreu suffered a facial contusion and laceration as well as a bruised left knee. However, initial concussion screening came back negative. Abreu is currently considered day-to-day.

Abreu and Dozier accidentally came together after Dozier popped a ball up around home plate. The White Sox first baseman hustled towards the plate in pursuit of the ball and as angling straight down the first base line. Dozier, meanwhile, flipped his bat and started running after spotting the ball.
Unfortunately, neither Abreu nor Dozier spotted the other. The two collided head-on and were grounded for some time after coming together.

Both players needed to be helped off the field. The Royals have yet to update Dozier's status, but hopefully he also avoided anything serious.
It's been a bit of a grind for both Abreu and Dozier to start the season.
Dozier and the Royals had lost 11 straight entering Friday's doubleheader with the White Sox, with the 29-year-old posting a mere .545 OPS in 123 plate appearances.
Abreu and the White Sox are off to a fast start and atop the AL Central, but the veteran slugger himself has not been able to replicate his 2020 MVP success. Abreu had a .793 OPS to start the season, though he was really starting to heat up this past week. Hopefully he won't have an extended absence.
