The White Sox appear to be inching closer to hiring veteran skipper Tony La Russa as their next manager. That is big news, but the bigger happening might involve Marcus Stroman. More on that in a second.
Jon Heyman of MLB Network was among those to report the White Sox are expected to make their managerial decision today, with La Russa as the expected frontrunner.
White Sox are expected to make a managerial hire soon. Eyes are Tony La Russa who’s believed to be Jerry Reinsdorf’s first choice, but no confirm he’s accepted yet. AJ Hinch among others under consideration. Experience is what they seek.

This would be in line with what White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said he desired in the team's next manager: someone with championship experience.
Tony La Russa won a championship with the Oakland Athletics, and two more with the St. Louis Cardinals. He would be taking over a Chicago team with plenty of young talent.
Whether he can be the kind of guy who lures free agents to the Windy City might be another question.
The White Sox are likely to pursue pitching upgrades in the offseason, and right-hander Marcus Stroman could possibly be one of their targets. However, Chicago might have a hard time signing Stroman if they hire La Russa.
Marcus Stroman liked a number of tweets criticizing some of La Russa's past comments regarding showing emotion and Black players in baseball.

The 29-year-old has always pitched with plenty of emotion and fire. How would this mesh with La Russa's managing style? Stroman does not seem to seem to think a partnership is possible.
It is curious the White Sox appear so intent on La Russa.
Granted, La Russa used to manage the White Sox and has a strong relationship with Jerry Reinsdorf. Still, he does not have the same kind of recent managerial experience as an A.J. Hinch or Alex Cora.
Perhaps Chicago's front office really believes Tony La Russa can get the team to a championship level.
But it seems his hiring could also dissuade players from signing with the White Sox, notably Marcus Stroman.
