Multiple teams that currently sit in first place in their respective divisions sure are planning on emerging as aggressive buyers for the upcoming MLB trade deadline. However, this may not be the case for the Milwaukee Brewers.

USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale provided updates on how several National League clubs are looking to approach next month’s trade deadline. For the Brewers, they will be open to listening to offers for a few of their standout players.

For one, Nightengale noted that the Brewers have notified teams that they are willing to listen to offers for closer Josh Hader. He mentions that while the Brewers “love” having Hader on their roster, they “believe” that they can ship off the four-time All-Star in return for “young talent” and still manage to win the NL Central this season. As it stands, they hold a 2.0 game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals for the top spot in the division.

Nightengale further added that the Brewers have “listened” to trade proposals for Hader before, which comes as the veteran closer is set to be under team control for a mere one more year. As was the case for the 2022 season, he will be arbitration-eligible for the 2023 campaign.

Nightengale speculated that the Los Angeles Dodgers would be the “most logical fit” for Hader, which comes as Craig Kimbrel has had his fair share of ups and downs in his first season as the closer for the current NL West leaders.

More so, Nightengale added that according to rival executives, the Brewers are “listening on” both second baseman Kolten Wong and catcher Omar Narvaez. They each have been regular starters for Milwaukee at their respective positions so far this season, although the two could go on to leave the team via free agency later this year. Narvaez is on par to become a free agent after the ongoing season, while Wong has a $10 million team option for the 2023 campaign that includes a $2 million buyout.

In the big picture, much sure can change for the Brewers from now until the Aug. 2 deadline. For now, they are set to open up a four-game road series against the San Francisco Giants.
