The New York Mets may soon end up facing a notable dilemma over the future of outfielder Brandon Nimmo, who is currently set to enter his final year of arbitration in the upcoming 2022 season. For the versatile Mets outfielder, he would like to stay on with the team.
On Saturday, Nimmo noted that he has not been approached by the team regarding a possible contract extension agreement, but he would be open to entertaining such a deal from the front office.
“This is all I’ve known, being a New York Met, and I like the direction that this team is headed,” Nimmo said. “I think that Steve [Cohen] at the helm of things is, he wants to win and will do what it takes to win. That’s what you need, first and foremost, is someone that’s willing to do it.
“I know being here for as long as I have, every year, all I hear about is the '69 Mets and the '86 Mets. I want to be one of those teams that brings a World Series back. … I would like to be a part of that. I haven’t been approached. We’ll see what happens, but definitely not against [an extension].”
Nimmo is just coming off of an injury-riddled season in the 2021 campaign, as he missed time due to hamstring and finger injuries. He wound up playing in 92 games over the course of the season, where he provided versatility to the Mets outfield defense by featuring out in left and center field, and also ended up posting a .294 batting average.
As it stands, Nimmo’s set position for the 2022 season is still up in the air, as Mets manager Buck Showalter will have multiple options for the trio of outfield spots now with Mark Canha and Starling Marte in the fold. Nimmo did recently note that he would want to take hold of the center field position for the upcoming campaign, which he played in 84 games over the last season.
In the big picture, a key 2022 season sure awaits Nimmo in what is currently slated to be his final year with the Mets.
