The New York Mets activated outfielder Brandon Nimmo ahead of their Sunday night tilt against the Philadelphia Phillies:

Nimmo received one plate appearance as a pinch hitter in a 5-2 loss on Sunday, walking and scoring one of the two runs the Mets tallied on the evening.

Nimmo had not played since May 20, when he was placed on the Injured List for what would later be discovered as a bulging disk in his neck, making him susceptible to whiplash. The Mets transferred their young outfielder to the 60-day IL, but he is back for the final month of the regular season.

The 26-year-old had not gotten off to a very good start in 2019, slashing .200/.344/.323 and producing a negative WAR through his first 43 games of the year.

The on-base number should not be a surprise, however. Nimmo ranked fourth in baseball with a .404 OBP in 2018, and he also ranked in the top 30 in fWAR while posting a 149 wRC+ value. Though New York's offense was supposed to be a question mark heading into the 2019 season, Nimmo looked like a sure thing as a future piece in outfield.

Instead, Nimmo struggled to play up to the standards he set in his first full season in the league, and he watched from the bench as guys like J.D. Davis have posted breakout campaigns.

Still, if Nimmo can produce down the stretch, the Mets will have one of the more productive outfield trios in baseball in Nimmo, Davis and Michael Conforto.

New York has no chance at catching the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, but there is still an outside shot at running down the Cubs for the second NL Wild Card spot.
