Jacob deGrom has yet to make an appearance on the mound for the New York Mets this season, but it appears that he is getting near to a return to active duty in the big leagues.
Via Mets beat writer Tim Healey:
Jacob deGrom’s next rehab start will be with Triple-A Syracuse. The Mets say they don’t know what day yet.
While nothing is quite certain yet in terms of deGrom's date of return to the Mets' rotation, he seems to be on the right track and probably just needs a few more reps in the minor leagues before finally making his season debut for New York. For now, deGrom is trying to get into his rhythm while pitching for the Mets' affiliate club St. Lucie Mets. But as reported by Healey, deGrom is about to go from Single-A to Triple-A, which is a good sign with regard to how close he is to making it back to the majors.
In his most recent appearance on the mound, he tossed three scoreless innings and fanned out six hitters for St. Lucie.
Here's what deGrom said about that performance (via Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post).
“Felt really good,” deGrom told reporters in Florida. “Coming off the first time in a game, back in a five-day routine, felt really good. Just happy to go out there and be able to get three, complete innings.”
Even though they are missing deGrom, the Mets have managed to keep their place atop the National League East. However, they are far from being a lock to win the division title, considering that the second half of the season is still ahead plus the fact that the Atlanta Braves are only 2.5 games behind, as of this writing.
The Mets are still pitching well with Max Scherzer back in action after dealing with an upper-body injury that landed him on the disabled list and with Chris Bassitt and Carlos Carrasco also having solid campaigns thus far.
