New York Mets new starting pitching pitcher Max Scherzer did something that is quite rare in baseball on Monday. Scherzer threw five innings and 72 pitches in his Spring Training debut. Typically, pitchers throw no more than 2-3 innings and 50 or less pitches in their first outing of the spring. But as pitcher Alex Wood put it, Scherzer is “built different.”

“Max Scherzer throwing 5 innings today is just incredible lol. What a savage. Guy is just built different.”

Scherzer had some comments on the outing as well.

“Got my work in, didn’t walk anybody, attacked the zone, lot of first pitch strikes, that’s all the good stuff.”

For Max Scherzer, it is a simple formula. Go out and be aggressive on the mound. For most people around baseball, seeing anybody throw that many pitches right out of the game is shocking. But Scherzer knows what he is doing and he is aware of what his arm can handle.

Additionally, the brand new New York Met credited the team’s fanbase.

“It's fun to have the New York fans behind you now.”

Scherzer also accomplished more than just throwing five innings and 72 pitches. The right-hander allowed just one earned run on three hits while striking out five and walking nobody in the performance. It seems as if he is already in mid-season form here in March.

Scherzer is expected to be second in the rotation behind ace Jacob DeGrom in a truly elite New York Mets pitching rotation that also features Carlos Carrasco, Chris Bassitt, and Taijuan Walker.

Max Scherzer will look to finish Spring Training on a high note and enjoy another successful season in 2022.
