The San Diego Padres are still without a manager, but it might not be too long before they finally introduce a new boss in the dugout. The announcement could even come as early as this week, with Jon Morosi of the MLB Network saying that sources have told him the National League West division club is on the verge of revealing its managerial choice.

“Sources: Padres are expected to hire their new manager by the middle of this week. Mike Shildt, Ryan Flaherty, Benji Gil, and Phil Nevin are known to have interviewed. Additional candidates remain under consideration, as well. “

The Padres were last managed by Bob Melvin, who parted ways with the team recently before joining one of San Diego's rivals in the NL West in the form of the San Francisco Giants.

Shildt and Flaherty were the first two candidates to be interviewed by the Padres for the position vacated by Melvin before Gil and Nevin got their turn.

David Ross is also rumored to be among the potential adds to the Padres' list of candidates, per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

“The Padres, according to a source, are considering adding Ross to their candidate pool. The longtime major league catcher played for the Padres for part of the 2005 season and had former Padres manager Andy Green as his bench coach in Chicago the past four seasons.”

Despite a star-laden roster, San Diego took a step back in 2023, winning just 82 games and missing the MLB playoffs after recording 89 wins a season before.
