The good news is that Mr. and Mrs. Smith has been renewed for Season 2. The bad news is that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are probably not returning. Bummer.

Amazon Prime Video announced the renewal news but declined to comment on whether or not the two actors would come back Variety reports. It's insider information that they won't be. That said, Glover is still credited as co-creator and executive producer.

In the series, Erskine played Jane Smith, and Glover was John Smith—two American spies undercover as a married couple, working their way through missions as their relationship is tested.

“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”

This announcement was made in New York on Tuesday during Amazon's upfront presentation to advertisers.

Season 1 ended gruesomely, so without giving spoilers, it's not too shocking that they won't return. That said, there's a ton of opportunity here for others to be part of the series and talking the roles that Glover and Erskine held.

About Mr. & Mrs. Smith

The official description of the series reads: “In the first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What's riskier: espionage or marriage?”

Glover and Erskine discussed the series at Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. They both discussed the series and their wonderful working relationship.

“Getting to know each other to find that trust was a very fun process,” Glover said. “Maya is very professional, so it was very easy to do all those things because it was friendly.

“It was friendly. It was easy-going at first, but we still had our like, ‘I'm Maya, I'm Donald [moments],'” Erskine said. “But I feel like when we did the subway scene in the first episode, we started sharing embarrassing stories about one another.”

Glover added, “Yes, embarrassing stories about growing up which I think always ties people together.”
