After 18 illustrious years in the league, two-time NBA champ Pau Gasol called it a career last summer. Nevertheless, while his playing days in the NBA might be done for, the fact of the matter is that the 39-year-old wants to end his career with one final stint for the Spanish national team. According to Spanish Basketball Federation president Jorge Garbajosa, the 7-foot-1 big man has every intention of joining the national squad for the upcoming Summer Olympics in 2020.

However, one huge stumbling block is Gasol's fitness. Not only has he not played a professional match in months, but as it turns out, the six-time All-Star is also dealing with an injury that might just hinder him from living out his swansong with Spain. Nonetheless, Garbajosa remains steadfast in his belief in Gasol, stating his confidence in the former third overall pick's bullish determination.

“He will do everything possible and part of the impossible to be there,” Garbajosa said, via Eurohoops. “If Pau wants and can, he will be. And if he can’t be on the court, let him be there in any position he wants. We will always wait for him”

Gasol is currently part of the coaching staff of the Portland Trail Blazers. He is under contract until the end of the current campaign, but considering the fact that the Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to kick off on the 24th of July — weeks after the conclusion of the NBA season — then there should be no conflict in this regard.
