Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been a target of criticism due to the way he runs the team for a long time, but Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison is taking the brunt of the heat after the controversial trade of Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Jones was asked about the Doncic trade, and he admitted that his wife, Gene, is a big basketball fan and cried about it.
“Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones was asked about the Luka Doncic trade. He said his wife, Gene, who is a big basketball fan, cried when Doncic was traded,” Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
The Mavericks' season came to a disappointing end in the NBA Play-In Tournament at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies. The trade of Doncic, which netted a return headlined by Anthony Davis, did not work out, at least in 2025. Kyrie Irving suffered an injury, along with other key players on the team. As a result, Harrison is catching the ire of Dallas sports fans right now.
Now, Jones and the Cowboys have the chance to get in good graces with Dallas sports fans for at least some period of time. The 2025 NFL Draft is approaching with the first round taking place on Thursday. The Cowboys have been known to be a good drafting team, despite their shortcomings when it comes to extending players and spending in free agency.
The Cowboys hold the No. 12 pick in the first round, which is a higher pick than the team usually has sat in the last decade. This is a chance to add a quality player to help a team that has star players in the fold already in CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons and Dak Prescott. A Parsons extension at some point this offseason wouldn't hurt the Cowboys when it comes to their approval rating with the fanbase either.
Regardless, the Doncic trade will go down as one of the most controversial trades in sports history.
